PACIFIC COAST SURGICALASSOCIATION Management of Symptomatic Polycystic Liver DiseaseWithHepatic Resection Polycystic liver disease causes devastating symptoms owing to hepatomegaly. Aspiration or fenestration fails to definitively remove the cyst wall and results in the reaccumulation of cyst fluid. Preserved hepatic function generally precludes consideration of a liver transplant, leaving hepatic resection the best available treatment option for patients with impairedqualityof life. This case series outlines a successful outcome using this operative strategy.

Combined hepatic resection with fenestration for highly symptomatic polycystic liver disease: A report on seven patients.
AIM To evaluate the immediate and long-term results in a series of patients with highly symptomatic polycystic liver disease (PLD) treated by combined hepatic resection with cystic fenestration. METHODS We reviewed our recent experience with a combined hepatic resection-fenestration procedure in seven highly symptomatic patients with PLD. Clinical data, liver manifestation of computed tomogra...
متن کاملTreatment of Highly Symptomatic Polycystic Liver Disease
Polycystic liver disease (PLD) associated with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is usually well tolerated. However there is a small subset of patients who become incapacitated by massive liver enlargement and for whom effective nonsurgical therapy is limited. Recent surgical advances in the treatment of PLD have raised uncertainties regarding proper management of these highly sympto...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to report the authors' experience with hepatic resection for cystic lesions of the liver. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA Past experience with aspiration, sclerosing therapy, internal drainage, fenestration, and marsupialization are of limited value. Hepatic resection has evolved into a safe operation over the last two decades. METHODS A retrospective study o...
متن کاملCurrent status in the surgical management of adult polycystic liver disease.
INTRODUCTION In patients with adult polycystic liver disease (APLD), there is considerable debate surrounding the most effective way of managing symptomatic cysts. Conservative approaches like percutaneous aspiration or cyst fenestration are associated with low morbidity but high recurrence rates. Conversely, liver resection and hepatectomy with orthotopic liver transplantation is drastic and a...
متن کاملLiver Involvement in Autosomal-Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease
Liver involvement is the most frequent extrarenal manifestation in autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Liver cysts are responsible for most hepatic complications, but other liver changes may occasionally be encountered, including congenital hepatic fibrosis and segmental dilation of the biliary tract. Both molecular and cellular changes implicated in liver cystogenesis have re...
